Gowns being collected for local teens in need

Clothes that Work’s “Magical Dress Drive” will donate gowns to local high school girls.

You can play the fairy godmother to local high school girls by donating your gently used gowns to Clothes That Work.

All dresses given to the upcoming “Magical Dress Drive” will be offered to local teens who may not otherwise be able to afford a formal dress for their prom or school formal dances.

Clothes That Work is the Miami Valley non-profit agency that provides clothing to women and men seeking employment. The dress drive, which began three years ago as the Fairy Godmother Project, has proven to be highly successful.

“Last year we collected 1,600 gowns and were able to distribute 550,” says Marsha Froelich, executive director of the organization. “There’s such excitement at the distribution party in March, the girls come with friends or family members, and I’m always touched by the number of fathers that come with their daughters. We also have door prizes and music.”

What they need:

The organization is looking for gently used fancy dresses in all sizes, and never has enough of size 18 and above, according to Froelich. The clothes can be dropped off at Clothes That Work from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sept. 24. The drop-off site is 1133 S. Edwin C. Moses Blvd, Ste. 392, Dayton

The group also needs accessories, such as party shoes and purses, wraps and jewelry.

For each dress donated Sept. 24, donors will receive a ticket voucher for the opening night performance of “Disney On Ice presents Mickey & Minnie’s Magical Journey” on Oct. 20 at the Nutter Center. There is a limit of two vouchers per family, and only 300 vouchers will be available.

If you have gowns to donate, they can also be taken to the organization at any other time. Call (937) 222-3778 for more information.

If you know of a needy young lady who could benefit from the Fairy Godmother Project, please invite her to come to Clothes That Work on dress distribution day; it’s noon to 4 p.m. March 10. No reservation is needed and no referral is necessary.

If your non-profit organization would like to publish its wish list, please send details to Meredith Moss: MMoss@coxohio.com Be sure to include a daytime phone number.
