A Dayton organization is playing fairy godmother to local teenagers.

Dionna Helping Hands is collecting prom and other formal dresses to give to local girls.

The second annual Operation Prom Dress is planned for 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturday, April 15 at Central State University's Dayton campus, 840 Germantown St. in Dayton's Wright-Dunbar neighborhood.

The reason for the event is simple.

"A lot of girls can't afford prom dresses," said Dionna Walker, founder of Dionna Helping Hands.

The small group provides clothing, furniture, diapers and other items to those in need.

Walker said all types of formal dresses are sought, including age-appropriate bridesmaid dresses.

“You’d be surprised what these young girls can do to make these dresses to their liking,” she added.

The dresses are free, but there is one requirement for the day.
