“It used to be in on the fourth floor on the older side of the hospital. It was hard for people to get there and they had a hard time because they had to go up a ramp and an elevator,’’ said Christine Logue, director of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation Services.
“With the move we were able to expand space, get some storage space, add new equipment and a gym for kids.’’
The new 5,451-square-foot facility now offers 36 percent more treatment space for adults and 48 percent more treatment space for pediatric patients.
The $600,000 relocation and expansion project also includes new treadmills and strength and mobility equipment such as the BTE Simulator and the Trazer.
The BTE Simulator is a tool that mimics hundreds of tasks such as raking leaves, lifting a tray, opening a door knob, a steering wheel or throwing a ball.
The Trazer is a virtual fitness and rehabilitation tool similiar to Nintendo’s Wii home video game system that works to improve balance, coordination and conditioning for people who are recovering from an injury.
Gloria Stubblefield of Hamilton was thrilled with the renovation and relocation.
“I love it. We can park right out front and come in,’’ said Stubblefield, who brought her grandson to the facility Friday for treatment. “This is really going to make it easier for us.”
