Ads for free pets could put them at risk

Many well-meaning people who need to find a home for a family pet will place an ad in the classified section titled, “Free to Good Home,” without realizing the danger in which they are placing the animal.

The problem is that many unscrupulous people, sometimes called “Bunchers,” scour the papers for these docile family pets and sell them to experimental laboratories. Other people get them to use them to train pit bulldogs to fight. Kittens and cats are used in the same way.

These people will pose as nice family people and promise a good home, only to make use of them in many unsavory ways.

The Humane Society of the United States, The Doris Day Animal League, our local SICSA and many other groups list other ways these helpless and trusting animals are used.

I think these ads should not be allowed. It also would be good if an appropriate section of the classifieds contained a warning about the “Free to Good Home” ads. The warning could also address the problem of selling a family pet too cheaply.
