W.S. McIntosh gave his life to Dayton

There was a man who was born on Feb. 2, 1921. He moved to Dayton in 1941 from Little Rock, Ark., and gave his life to this city. Earlier this month, he would have celebrated his 89th birthday if he were still alive. He wasn’t a wealthy man, so his gift wasn’t wealth; he ran for public office, but was never elected.

However, he improved the quality of life, not just  for the black people of the city, as he fought and protested for jobs and justice, but for all the residents of Dayton. He had the courage to show us that injustice and inequality hurts everyone.

This man was W.S. McIntosh. A city park in West Dayton was renamed for him and a scholarship program at the University of Dayton honors his memory. But this is small recognition for a man who did so much for this city. I end with a question. Where would Dayton be if there had been no W.S. McIntosh?
