This year marks the 61st observance of the National Day of Prayer since Harry S. Truman signed an annual event into law on April 17, 1952.

In 1988 President Reagan designated the first Thursday each May as the National Day of Prayer. This year that observance will be this Thursday, May 3.

National author and speaker Jennifer Kennedy Dean is participating in activities for the National Day of Prayer at the Capitol Building in Washington, D.C. Her next stop after that? Kettering, Ohio.

Administrators at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Kettering thought that two days after the National Day of Prayer would be a great time to have a Community Prayer Conference.

Next Saturday, May 5, Dean will lead a full day of activities centered on prayer. The morning session will center on the idea of living a praying life. After a box lunch, the afternoon session is called a Concert of Prayer. It will be a guided prayer experience based on the Old Testament Tabernacle.

“God, in his sovereignty, set it up so that prayer is the conduit that brings his power and provision out of the spiritual end of the spectrum, moves it through the gap, and brings it to the circumstances of earth,” said Dean on her Gleanings blog.

Dean, who has been a widow since 2005, lives in Marion, Ky., and has three grown sons.

Among Dean’s many books, studies and articles on the subject of prayer is her book “Heart’s Cry.” It was named the National Day of Prayer signature book.

Her book “Live a Praying Life” has been called “a flagship work on prayer.” To learn more about Dean, go online to www.prayinglife.org. Daily quotes and articles by Dean can also be found at the National Day of Prayer website, at nationaldayofprayer.org.

“Did you know that there is a difference between a prayer life and a praying life? You can think of prayer as part of your life, or you can understand that there is an undercurrent of prayer active in every moment,” said Dean on her Gleanings blog. “Instead of saying ‘I have a prayer life,’ you can say, ‘I have a praying life.’ You can walk in a flow of the power and provision of God.”

The $15 per person cost for next Saturday’s conference includes a continental breakfast and the lunch. Child care for ages six months to 5 years is available upon request.

Proceeds from the conference will aid Emmanuel Lutheran’s youth group and their mission trip to Zambia. Their focus will be “Serving AIDS orphans in Jesus’ name.”
