River-stone trivet an easy, inexpensive project

Finished product can compare with far more costly one from a store.

At a kitchen store, a trivet can be a decorative piece for your kitchen that can cost you an arm and a leg. However, with this simple and fast DIY, under-$10 project, you can make a professional looking stone trivet for just $3.99.

In fact, depending on how many rocks you purchase, you can make two or three trivets and still stay under $10 for all of them.

You will need

Purchased:

Three bags of varying size and color river rocks — $3 at the Dollar Tree

One circular mouse pad — 99 cents at Ikea

Items I already had around the house:

Gorilla Glue

Black acrylic paint

Foam brush

Fine-point paintbrush

Directions

1. Use your acrylic paint to paint your mouse pad black. Let dry completely.

2. Place rocks around the mouse pad so little to no space is showing. Choose rocks that are about the same height so your pot or kettle won’t wobble when you place it on the trivet.

3. Once you are happy with the layout of your rocks, begin gluing them down individually with the Gorilla Glue.

4. Let the glue dry completely. With this type of glue, when it dries, it expands.

If you have glue showing between your rocks, simply take some of your black paint and, with a fine-point paintbrush, paint over the glue.

5. Let everything dry for at least two hours and you are ready to go.

The rocks will naturally absorb the heat, so you can place any hot pan, pot or kettle directly from the oven onto your trivet.
