Created by Hwang Dong-hyuk, the first season of “Squid Game” released in 2021 and became a massive hit. According to a Variety article written by Jennifer Maas, more than 330 million people have watched the series, making it the platform’s most popular show to-date.
The series sees desperate contestants compete in a number of life-or-death challenges for a mysterious game show. One of these trials prominently featured dalgona cookies. These treats, typically made from sugar and baking soda, have various shapes pressed into them.
A popular children’s game in Korea has players attempt to eat or cut around the shape’s outline. This challenge was adapted in the show’s third episode, now with deadly stakes.
The cookies sold by Han Guk Market are based directly on the series. The shop offers all of the shapes featured in the episode, including the infamous umbrella.

On the packaging, fans are invited to “take the challenge,” similar to the characters in “Squid Game.” However, no lives will be taken if the cookie is broken.
