Vietnam Vets will pick up household goods donations

Reflecting on the sacrifices that our men and women in uniform have made for the country is reserved for Memorial Day.

So what better time to consider making a donation to the Vietnam Veterans of America than Memorial Day weekend?

Proceeds from The Household Goods Donations Program help support the needs of veterans throughout the nation and elsewhere through scholarships, work with the homeless, and more.

“We don’t own thrift stores, so we profit from the donations by selling directly to privately owned thrift stores,” explains Quentin Butcher, business director for Vietnam Veterans of America in Washington. The organization needs and accepts a wide variety of items, and will pick it up from you directly free of charge.

“We collect just about anything one person can carry,” Butcher said. You can donate gently used clothing, household items, stereos, radios and portable televisions. The group welcomes bedding, draperies, kitchenware, small furniture and rugs, small appliances, all kinds of tools, jewelry and cosmetics.

Used clothing for men, women, children and babies, is especially needed.

Mattresses, however, cannot be accepted, and exercise equipment is accepted only if it is small enough to easily load onto a truck.

If you have an item you’re wondering about, it’s best to call the pick-up service at (888) 518-8387.

For regular pick-up, visit www.vvadonations.org or call (888) 518-8387.

An operator will take your information, and you’ll be given a pick-up date. Items are picked up between 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on the designated day. You don’t need to be home. Just leave items outside, clearly marked for Vietnam Veterans of America. A tax-deduction form will be left on the door.
