The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation is handling the investigation.
In a statement Thursday afternoon, Acting Miami Twp. Police Chief James McCarty said that at about 2:06 p.m. dispatchers received a call from the 9200 block of Sawgrass Drive, near PipeStone Golf Club.
The caller said that her son was threatening several family members in the house and had a knife.
When officers arrived starting around 2:10 p.m., McCarty said that all of the family was outside, and police made contact with Stephenson, who still had a knife.
In all, six officers responded to the scene.
The acting chief said that officers repeatedly ordered Stephenson to drop the knife, and used a Taser and a beanbag shotgun in an attempt to get him to drop it.
McCarty said that Stephenson refused to drop the knife and moved toward officers, so “an officer-involved shooting occurred.”
Officers began first aid until EMS arrived, the acting chief said, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
It was initially reported by Miami Twp. officials that an officer was injured in the incident, but McCarty, during the press conference, said no officers were hurt.
Police issued a call for assistance around 2:20 p.m. after reports of shots fired in the 9200 block of Sawgrass Drive near PipeStone Golf Club.
Responding to the scene were Miami Twp. Police Department, Miamisburg Police Department, Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office deputies, Miami Valley Fire District crews and Ohio BCI investigators.
Five of the six officers on scene were placed on administrative leave, McCarty said, which is the policy after officers are involved in a shooting.
He added that all of the officers were wearing body cameras, and that they were working on processing the large amount of video.
McCarty said that their condolences and hearts go out to Stephenson’s family and to the officers who were involved in the shooting.
