Crews arrived within four minutes to heavy fire on both floors of a two-story house. Firefighters rescued two residents from a roof in the back, said Dayton Fire Department Assistant Chief Brad French. The pair were transported to the hospital for an evaluation.
Firefighters used multiple hose lines to battle the fire and tried to search the inside of the house but had to evacuate due to the risk of a structural collapse, French said. Crews continued to fight the fire from outside the house.
A third resident was later found by crews and pronounced dead at the scene. Their identity was not available as of Tuesday morning.
The house was a total loss, and an emergency demolition was completed.
The Dayton Fire Department Fire Investigations Unit is investigating the fire.
A second fatal fire was reported Saturday morning at a three-story apartment building on Riverview Terrace, just west of the Salem-Riverview intersection, in Dayton.
Firefighters rescued a person in critical condition from the building, French said. Medics transported him to Miami Valley Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Montgomery County Coroner Dr. Kent Harshbarger identified him as 34-year-old Dwayne Harbour Jr.
Two others escaped the apartment building prior to firefighters arriving on scene. They were also transported to the hospital.
The DFD Fire Investigations Unit is investigating the cause of the Riverview Terrace fire as well.
