1 flown, 1 driven to hospital after crash into school bus in Preble County

Two people were taken to the hospital, one via medical helicopter, after a multi-vehicle crash Friday afternoon involving a school bus in Preble County.

No students nor the bus driver were injured in the crash reported in the crash reported shortly before 2:50 p.m. in the 3300 block of U.S. 40 in Monroe Twp., according to the Preble County Sheriff’s Office.

A National Trail Local Schools bus headed east on U.S. 40 stopped and turned on its lights to let off a student.

A 2024 Toyota stopped behind the bus and then a 2014 Hyundai rear-ended the Toyota, pushing it into the back of the bus. Both cars were heavily damaged, the sheriff’s office said.

MedFlight flew the driver of the Hyundai to Kettering Health Main Campus with serious injuries.

Medics took the driver of the Toyota by ambulance to Reid Memorial Hospital in Richmond, Indiana, with injuries that were not life-threatening.

There were 26 students aboard the bus at the time of the crash. They were transferred to another bus that completed the route.

U.S. 40 was closed for about an hour and a half while deputies investigated.

The sheriff’s office said it was joined on scene by the North Central EMS, Eldorado Fire Department, West Manchester Fire Department and Northwest EMS.

The crash remains under investigation, the sheriff’s office said.
