Wright said that patrols were in downtown West Milton due to complaints about traffic surrounding construction when they saw a van moving at a high speed on the wrong side of the road.
A West Milton sergeant also saw the van run a stop sign, looking like it may tip over in the process, the chief said.
The sergeant turned on their lights and pursued. During the pursuit, the chief said that the van would at times weave into the oncoming lane, and at one point pulled into the parking lot of a dentist’s office, circled the building, then got back on the road.
The chief said that the sergeant followed from a distance, trying to warn people to avoid the van, until the van went off the side of the road, hit a pole and rolled over, coming to rest on its wheels in Clayton.
According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, who are investigating the crash, said that the crash was reported at 5:22 p.m. at the intersection of N. Main Street and Sweet Potato Ridge Road.
The woman was taken to Miami Valley Hospital, while the two children were taken to Dayton Children’s Hospital, the highway patrol said.
Wright said that one of the children was in a car seat. None of the injuries were life-threatening, he said.
Police are investigating the pursuit as an OVI, he said, adding that they suspect alcohol was involved. The pursuit is still under investigation, and charges will be filed later, the chief said.
