Aldi grocery chain plans new store on Miller Lane in Vandalia

Aldi also announced plans this week for a new Troy location.

National grocery chain Aldi may soon be heading to Vandalia.

According to planning documents recently submitted to the city, the grocer plans to develop a new location at 6415 Miller Lane, just south of the intersection with Benchwood Road, and immediately south of Culver’s restaurant.

Documents show plans to construct a 20,664-square-foot building on a 2-acre plot of land. The site is currently undeveloped.

The project proposal is scheduled to be presented to Vandalia planning commission on Feb. 14, according to Assistant City Manager Amber Holloway.

Aldi currently has more than 150 locations in Ohio, with additional locations in the works. Earlier this week, the city of Troy confirmed an Aldi location will be developed on Troy Town Drive, just west of I-75 and south of Ohio 41.

Dayton region Aldi locations include Beavercreek, Centerville, Kettering, Huber Heights, Englewood and Middletown. Each ALDI store employs between 15 and 20 people, an Aldi representative said in September.

Known for its affordability and no-frills store design, Aldi claims to keep prices low by offering a majority of private brand items, as opposed to national brands typically found at big box stores.

In 1961, the Albrecht Family founded its first discount grocery store in Germany, which gave way to the first Aldi store that opened in 1976 in Iowa. Today, the grocer is based in Batavia, Illinois, and has over 2,200 stores across 39 states with over 25,000 employees.

In 2022, approximately 150 new Aldi stores opened nationwide. In addition to opening stores, Aldi expanded its curbside grocery pickup offering from 1,200 to 1,500 stores.
