A deputy searching a Dayton apartment building early Tuesday found a “badly decomposed” body in the basement.

Dayton police responded around 3 a.m. to 14 Maylan Drive after a Montgomery County Sheriff’s deputy came across the body as part of an unrelated grand theft auto investigation, Dayton police Maj. Brian Johns said.

“When they were inside they found a badly decomposed body in the basement,” he said.

Investigators are working to identify the body and how the person died.

It is not clear whether the body, which Johns said “appeared to be there for quite some time,” was that of an adult or juvenile, and its gender also was unknown.

“So far in our investigation we believe that apartment became vacated around 2015,” Johns said. “So if you do the math it’s been awhile. And the state of the body also makes it difficult. So we have things to figure out, like who it is and how they passed away. Once we know that we’ll investigate more about who did it if it turns out to be a homicide.”
