Coronavirus: State passes 9,000 deaths

The second day of January brought the state to a new deadly milestone. Over 9,000 people have died of coronavirus since the pandemic officially began in March. Over 1,000 people have died since Dec. 19, when the state passed 8,000 deaths.

Due to the New Years Day holiday, the Ohio Department of Health did not report its daily coronavirus data. Over Jan. 1 and 2, new deaths totaled 55, bringing deaths to 9,017. The state reported 14,293 new cases over two days and 299 hospitalizations over the past 48 hours. Since the beginning of the pandemic, ODH has reported 714,673 cases and 38,633 hospitalizations.

In Ohio, 4,102 people are currently hospitalized. In southwest Ohio, 1,153 people are hospitalized, the Ohio Hospital Association reported.

Dayton area schools reported more than 3,500 COVID-19 cases involving students or school employees from Sept. 7 until the end of the year, according to data from the Ohio Department of Health. Statewide, the total was over 36,000.

The data dashboard was the result of a state order requiring schools to report cases to their county health departments within 24 hours of learning of the situation.
