Crews could hear ammunition popping Friday afternoon when they responded to a house fire near New Lebanon.

New Lebanon Fire Chief John Keyser said smoke was reported in the area shortly before 3 p.m., when responding crews discovered a two-story house on fire in the 14000 block of Eaton Pike, also known as U.S. 35 in Jackson Twp.

The New Lebanon Fire Department encountered heavy flames inside and outside, with small explosions from the ammo that only lasted a few minutes as crews doused the flames, Keyser said.

The property is in a portion of the township without fire hydrants. This is why the department requested water tankers from Farmersville, Brookville, West Alexandria and Verona police departments, the chief said.

The couple who owns the home were out working at the time of the fire, Keyser said.

No injuries were reported, but firefighters had yet to find a small pet reported to be inside the house.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
