A fire destroyed an abandoned house and spread to the house next door Wednesday night in Dayton amid windy conditions, displacing a family of three.

The fire was reported around 6:55 p.m. at an abandoned house at 2115 E. Fourth St, near South Van Lear Street, according to a call log from the Montgomery County Regional Dispatch Center.

“Trees, house, the whole thing’s in flames,” said a woman who called 911 from her house across the street.

Responding Dayton Fire Department crews encountered heavy fire throughout a two-story house that was spreading, read a social media post from the department.

“There is a big house fire,” said another 911 caller who reported the blaze after driving by on her way to pick up her daughter. “You could definitely feel the heat driving passed.”

She also reported that the fire was spreading to the attached garage of the house next door.

“The top of the garage is starting to smoke,” she said.

Wednesday was windy in Dayton, with peak wind gusts at times between 35 and 40 mph, according to the National Weather Service in Wilmington.

Fire was limited to the roof, exterior and attic of the second house, according to the call log.

However, the house where the fire originated collapsed. It is not clear how the fire started, but no injuries were reported.

The American Red Cross was called to assist a woman and two boys, ages 11 and 8, who were displaced from the second house.
