Dayton ombudsman: woman gets help with storm sewer problem

A homeowner contacted the Ombudsman to complain about a problem that has continued for three years. A storm sewer at her property is cracked. The woman is fearful that it may cave in and might take her mailbox and part of her yard with it. Last year her municipality came to the property and marked the storm sewer with white paint, but no other action has been taken. Work crews from the municipality have been in her area, but her problem was not fixed or resolved. She reported leaving messages and not receiving any return telephone calls.

The Ombudsman contacted the municipality to inquire into the complaint. The Department of Public Works responded by stating that the status of the storm sewer had been evaluated, and that the cracks on the top were noted. The inspection confirmed that there was no structural damage. The work was placed on the list to have the cracks filled.

The homeowner was informed that the inspection revealed there was no structural damage and that the repair was scheduled. The following month, the homeowner informed the Ombudsman Office that the cracks had been filled.

The Ombudsman Column, a production of the Joint Office of Citizens’ Complaints, summarizes selected problems that citizens have had with government services, schools and nursing homes in the Dayton area.
