Danbarry Cinemas demolished; car dealer hopes to build there

The former site of Danbarry Cinemas behind the Dayton Mall is no longer, as crews demolished the shuttered movie theater Tuesday.

Kenwood Dealer Group purchased the dilapidated building that once was home to Danbarry Cinemas along with approximately eight acres for $2.1 million in early 2021.

Miami Twp. trustees last November approved rezoning for a $7 million, 30,000-square-foot Mazda dealership to replace the theater. That includes the purchase price of the building, construction and equipment, according to Bob Reichert, owner of Kenwood Dealer Group.

Despite the purchase of the site and the rezoning approval, Miami Twp. tweeted Tuesday that what is coming to the site is “TBA” — or to be announced.

“The final development plan has not been approved yet, so officially we do not have the final design of what will be placed on the site,” Miami Twp. assistant administrator Chris Snyder told the Dayton Daily News. “The zoning permits the dealership use, but plans can always change and we are only part way through the full approval process at this point.”

Reichert said the dealership group will present its final development plan for the site Aug. 9 to the Miami Twp. Zoning Commission, which will make its recommendation for trustees to either approve or deny the plan.

That recommendation would next go before township trustees, who would vote on the plan.

“Once we get approval from the township, we will move forward expeditiously with the construction,” Reichert said.

The project would take “probably about nine months” to complete, he said.

Trustee Terry Posey Jr. said in November that it was nearly unanimous among local business owners that the zoning change could be a catalyst for development in an area that had been seeing some decline.

“The project is going to bring a quality redevelopment and nearly 100 jobs,” Posey said.
