A large fire Friday afternoon destroyed a building and multiple vehicles inside a Dayton automotive business.

The fire was reported around 3 p.m. at Ken’s Automotive in the 2200 block of Valley Street.

District Chief Chris Kinzeler of the Dayton Fire Department said workers were cutting catalytic converters off cars as part of a salvage operation when a vehicle’s gas line was hit, sparking the fire.

The estimated loss is $100,000 to the building and vehicles, which Kinzeler called a “total loss.”

No injuries were reported, but a hazardous materials crew was called to help prevent oil and gasoline from reaching a creek near the property. Kinzeler also said they tried to limit how much water was used to fight the fire to protect the creek.

Crews also alerted the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency, according to reports.

A second building on the property was not damaged.

Multiple vehicles were destroyed that were inside a building also destroyed Friday afternoon, Aug. 20, 2021, during a fire at Ken’s Automotive on Valley Street in Dayton. Hazmat crews also were called to the scene. Jim Noelker/Staff
