The Greene County Sheriff’s Office responded to the 2100 block of U.S. 68 around 1:24 p.m. Tuesday.
A man pulled up the porch’s flooring and found what appeared to be a leg bone, according to an incident report. He also found a possible jawbone.
Some of the remains were identified as human through a photo analysis, according to the sheriff’s office.
Warren Hensley, an investigator with the Greene County Coroner’s Office, described some of the bones are “definitely human” and others are “possibly human.”
They appeared to come from the same person, he added.
Texas Equusearch responded to help exhume the bones. The coroner’s office collected the remains and took them to the Miami Valley Crime Lab.
A pathologist physically confirmed the original photo analysis, the sheriff’s office said.
The coroner’s office is sending the bones to a forensic anthropologist for additional testing and examination.
It’s not clear how long the bones have been there, but Hensley said they could be pretty old.
A deputy noted the ground under the porch was soft and had burrows and animal carcasses. It “had been this way for a while,” according to the incident report.
The incident remains under investigation.
