The contraflow lane on Interstate 75 South north of downtown Dayton will be closed on Sunday due to the expected winter storm.

In a release, the Ohio Department of Transportation said that starting late Sunday morning or early that afternoon, crews would close the southbound contraflow lane between Needmore Road and Leo Street for the duration of the storm.

A contraflow lane is when the leftmost lane splits off by itself, separated by a concrete barrier for a few miles to allow construction work to be done.

ODOT said that clearing snow and ice from such a lane is challenging at any time, but because there could be significant amounts of winter precipitation they decided to just close the lane for safety.

The department also urged drivers to use winter driving habits, be extra attentive in work zones and to give plow trucks and snow removal equipment plenty of room on the road.
