Cause of large apartment building fire in Dayton under investigation

The building is vacant and no injuries were reported, according to the fire department.

The cause of a large fire at a vacant Dayton apartment building Thursday afternoon is under investigation.

No injuries were reported.

The fire was reported at 12:52 p.m. at 1957 Riverside Drive, according to Montgomery County Regional Dispatch.

A 911 caller who reported the fire said they “briefly, verbally” checked if anyone was inside but did not get a response, according to dispatch records.

The caller, who identified themself as a neighbor, said it appeared the fire started on the second floor.

The fire was fully involved when Dayton firefighters got on scene.

Crews started an interior attack, but were called out of the building once flames were going through the roof, said Dayton Fire Department District Chief David Thomas.

Firefighters then transitioned to defensive techniques and were able to save the building at the fire wall.

Thomas said he ordered an emergency demolition for the right side of the structure, which was heavily damaged by the fire.

The complex is vacant, but crews were not able to search the entire property due to the fire conditions. Firefighters will finish the search once conditions are safe, Thomas said.

Flames could be seen coming from the roof as firefighters poured water onto the building. A large cloud of smoke was visible in the area due to the fire.
