The Mad River School District is seeking a new member to join the Board of Education after Mitch Lambert, who was appointed earlier this year, resigned due to moving out of state.

Lambert said he and his family purchased a vacation home in Indiana and it ended up being a permanent home.

The selected candidate will serve the remainder of the term, which ends Dec. 31, 2025. Letters of interest for the position should be sent via email to treasurer Jerry Ellender at jerry.ellender@madriverschools.org. Letters must be received by 4 p.m. on Dec. 31.

To be eligible for the school board seat, a person must be a resident of and registered voter in the school district. The applicant must also be at least 18 years of age.

The appointed board member will be expected to attend monthly and occasional special meetings and actively engage with the school community, the district said. This includes gathering stakeholder input and attending school events such as sports or extracurricular activities. Additionally, the new board member will have the opportunity to run for a full four-year term in the November 2025 election.

Interviews for the position will be held on Monday, Jan. 6, starting at 4 p.m. The appointment will be finalized either at a special meeting before the regular Board of Education meeting on Jan. 27 or during the Jan. 27 meeting itself.

Lambert was appointed to fill the vacancy in January when it was announced previously that longtime member Cristina Pickle had resigned. She did not provide a reason why she had resigned, but she served the schools in some capacity for almost 30 years.

Lambert was a peewee football coach and involved in Stebbins athletics for several years before he was appointed to the board.

The remaining three finalists for the position that Lambert was ultimately appointed to included Amy Cooper, Beverly Sherwood and Terrance Tolbert.
