One man was killed and another injured in a shooting early Tuesday outside an alleged “boot joint” in Dayton.

The Montgomery County Regional Dispatch Center received reports at 3:11 a.m. of a male on the sidewalk and multiple shots fired near South Conover and West Fifth streets.

“Upon arrival officers located a victim, a 37-year-old male,” said Dayton police Lt. Steven Bauer. “Officers attempted life-saving measures; however the male was pronounced deceased at the scene.”

He was identified Tuesday afternoon as John Favors by Montgomery County Coroner Dr. Kent Harshbarger. A dispatch log indicated he was shot in the head.

“Officers responding to an unrelated call were flagged down by two females in a sedan with multiple bullet holes in it,” Bauer said. “They advised of the shooting, and it was at this time that the regional dispatch center announced that there were reports of a person shot in the area of Conover and Fifth.”

A 33-year-old man with a gunshot wound later arrived at a local hospital by private vehicle, he said. That man’s injury was not life-threatening.

Dayton police Sgt. Shawn Olinger said the shooting took place outside an alleged bootleg bar that serves alcohol after hours. He added issues have come up recently but couldn’t officer additional details.

Multiple people called 911 and reported gunfire in the area. At least two callers said they believed their homes were struck, according to dispatch records. Another caller reported hearing 20 to 30 shots.

A woman said she woke up to the sound of gunshots and cars pulling away from an alleged bootleg club.

“I literally woke up in my bed to a whole lot of gunfire and to cars skirting out of their yard,” she said.

She said people were fighting in the street and a person was on the ground.
