The contraflow lane on Interstate 75 South north of downtown Dayton has been closed again as snow moves back into the area.

On social media, the Ohio Department of Transportation said that the contraflow lane has been closed between Needmore Road and Leo Street for the duration of the winter storm.

A contraflow lane is when the leftmost lane splits off by itself, separated by a concrete barrier for a few miles to allow construction work to be done.

This is the second time this week that ODOT closed the lane, previously doing so during the winter storm that started Sunday and dropped several inches of snow across the area.

At the time, ODOT said that clearing snow and ice from such a lane is challenging at any time, but because there could be significant amounts of winter precipitation they decided to just close the lane for safety.

The department also urged drivers to use winter driving habits, be extra attentive in work zones and to give plow trucks and snow removal equipment plenty of room on the road.
