Police responding to a domestic call Saturday morning at a Dayton residence fired at a man who showed a weapon, officials said in a news conference.

After a 911 caller stated a man was threatening to kill her, officers arrived at the home in the 1200 block of Rosedale Drive around 8:36 a.m. The Montgomery County Regional Dispatch confirmed to police officers the given location had prior calls for mental health.

“Officers first made contact with the caller and learned that the male had a history of violence and mental health,” police said.

By 8:43 a.m., the armed suspect returned to the residence and was identified by the 911 caller. Police said the man was in a car and had a gun. A county-wide request for assistance was made.

At 9:09 a.m., police said after attempting to de-escalate the situation for more than 25 minutes, the man “brandished his weapon” and in return, police shot at him.

After being given aid, police took the suspect to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

Rosedale Drive was closed while officials from multiple jurisdictions were there.

The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation will handle the shooting investigation. A separate independent administrative investigation will be conducted by the Professionals Standard Bureau.

Additional details will be released at a later time, police said.
