Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine orders flags raised to full staff for Inauguration Day

Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine has ordered that flags in the state be raised on Monday for the inauguration then lowered again afterward.

Flags on public buildings and grounds were previously lowered to half-staff to honor former President James Carter, who died on Dec. 29, 2024.

The U.S. flag code indicates that flags can be lowered to half-staff for 30 days to mourn the death of a current or former president.

The governor said that the flags would be raised “In honor of the inauguration of the 47th President of the United States of America, Donald J. Trump,” on Jan. 20, and then lowered again on Jan. 21-28.

This order brings Ohio into line with California’s Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom and a handful of Republican governors like Florida’s Ron DeSantis and Texas’ Greg Abbott, who all issued similar orders to raise the flag in their states for the inauguration then relower it on Jan. 21.

Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson also ordered the flags on the U.S. Capitol be raised to full staff for the inauguration before lowering again.
