Ohio reports more than 5,000 daily COVID cases for 2nd time this week

The number of daily cases reported over the last four days are the four highest totals reported in three weeks. The slight increase in cases comes after weeks of a decline following a surge of cases due to the delta variant.

Ohio’s 21-day average is 3,825 cases a day, according to ODH. In the last week, Ohio is averaging 4,446 cases a day.

Ohio reported 361 COVID-19 deaths Friday, bringing its total to 25,643, according to ODH. It’s the second-highest number of deaths reported in three weeks. On Oct. 29, 363 deaths were reported.

Ohio updates COVID death data twice a week. Because other states don’t regularly report death certificate data to Ohio’s Bureau of Vital Statistics the data can fluctuate.

The day a death is reported does not reflect the day the death occurred.

As of Friday, 40,368 children ages 5 to 11 have started the pediatric COVID-19 vaccine in Ohio. More than 4% of children in that age group have received at least one dose of the vaccine.

In the Miami Valley, ODH is reporting the following pediatric vaccinations in each county:

Statewide, 6.56 million people have started the COVID-19 vaccine, accounting for 56.2% of Ohioans. About 67.38% of adults have received at least on dose of the vaccine and 59.73% of people 5 and older. More than 6.08 million residents, or 52.08%, have finished the vaccine, including 62.93% of adults and 55.35% of people 5 and older.

ODH reported 2,465 COVID-19 patients were hospitalized Friday in Ohio, including 681 patients in ICUs and 462 on ventilators.

Coronavirus patients account for 9.4% of hospital beds, 14.67% of ICU beds and 9.71% of ventilators in the sate. Ohio has 5,196 (19.8%) hospital beds, 963 (20.74%) ICU beds and 3,007 (63.2%) ventilators available.

In the last day, Ohio recorded 140 hospitalizations and 12 ICU admissions. The state’s 21-day average is 171 hospitalizations and 18 ICU admissions a day.
