Emergency crews were around 2:30 a.m. to a crash at Central Avenue and Main Street and found that a single vehicle had crashed into the memorial. Photos from the scene show the car landed on its top, and debris was strewn for some distance.
The driver was taken to the hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening, Fairborn police said.
An image posted to the City of Fairborn’s Facebook page showed significant damage to the memorial.
Originally, the post said that the intersection was closed for crews to make repairs and to secure the flagpole.
However, in an update, the city said the intersection had reopened, but the pole was removed due to structural damage.
The crash also reportedly damaged some nearby buildings, including the Fairborn Community Library and the Fairborn Area Chamber of Commerce.
The memorial and flagpole were located in the center of the intersection of Main and Central.
