The Dayton Bomb Squad disposed of an explosive device found on the sidewalk near a business on North Main Street in Dayton Monday evening.

“The initial investigation revealed that the item in question was a small explosive device,” said Dayton Police Lt. Jason Hall, commander of the Dayton Bomb Squad. “The investigation is on-going, but at this time there is no indication of any threat to the public.”

The device was first reported at 3:26 p.m. near the intersection of North Main Street and White Allen Avenue, according to Montgomery County Regional Dispatch Center records.

A 9-1-1 caller told dispatchers the device looked like a mortar shell with a wick coming out of it, according to dispatch records. It reportedly was wrapped in black tape.

Police closed North Main Street between Riverdale street and I-75 for about two hours as crews investigated.

“The bomb squad properly disposed of the ‘homemade bomb’ and the streets were opened back up,” a Dayton Police Department incident report read.
