Police initially were called around 2:15 p.m. to check on a person’s wellbeing but found a woman who was the victim of domestic violence, said Maj. Christopher Malson of the Dayton Police Department.
The suspect, identified by Malson as Nicholas Graves, was armed with a handgun inside the house, he said.
Police requested SWAT and hostage negotiation teams because “when they attempted to make contact in order to take him into custody, he refused to come out of the residence,” Malson said.
During the nearly three-hour standoff, police used a bullhorn to repeatedly order Graves to come out, saying he was under arrest. In addition to working with street crews, negotiators and the man’s family, they set off off flash bombs inside the house.
Dayton police also warned people to stay away during the police activity.
“Please stay out of the area including surrounding streets until the area is clear,” the department posted on social media.
The victim, his girlfriend, suffered minor injuries that did not require further treatment, Malson said.
Graves, 19, was taken to the Montgomery County Jail but has not been formally charged in connection to Tuesday’s incident. However, he has a pending case in Montgomery County Common Pleas Court for carrying concealed weapon and pending misdemeanor assault and traffic violations in Dayton Municipal Court, records show.
