The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigations is taking over the investigation.
“We secured the scene and let them do everything that they need to do but from what I understand the witnesses said the officers and deputy on the scene did everything they could to try to get the individual into custody peacefully before there unfortunately was an officer-involved shooting,” Streck said.
BCI officers were seen outside the residence Friday morning with metal detectors, placing evidence markers around the scene.
Deputies first responded to a house the 2200 block of Sherer Avenue around 2 a.m. on a domestic violence report, Streck said. Once at the scene, they discovered a suspect stabbed a family member at the residence.
Deputies got the victim out of the house and had them transported to the hospital. They suffered non-life-threatening injuries, and is currently in stable condition, the sheriff said.
Streck said that the suspect was acting erratically, so deputies got the stabbing victim out of the house and called for SWAT.
For the next 40 minutes, he said, deputies used their PA systems to try to get the suspect to come out of the home. Meanwhile, officers reportedly could hear the suspect tearing up the home.
When the suspect did come out deputies used “less lethal” tactics such as bags and deploying TASERs.
“There were officers and deputies who tried to physically detain him that he was able to get away from,” Streck said. “At that point a K9 was also released to try and take him into custody. None of that worked. He was able to get back into the house.”
The next time the suspect left the house, he had a weapon and charged officers on the perimeter, the sheriff said.
“At that point there was an officer-involved shooting,” he said.
The shooting involves officers from a few different agencies, including Dayton police and deputies from the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office and SWAT were on scene during the shooting, and that crews from more jurisdictions were on the way.
It is not clear which officers fired or what agency they were from.
The K9 was also injured, and was taken to an animal hospital. The dog’s condition is unknown, but Streck said he last heard the K9 was up on his feet.
