One of the longest-serving members of the Riverside City Council says she would like the city to consider offering free, voluntary out-of-home gun storage to residents, similar to a program that recently launched in Cincinnati.

Council member Sara Lommatzsch said she thinks gun storage could help residents who are worried about people they live with who are struggling with mental health issues.

The Cincinnati Police Department last month unveiled a new Safe Storage Program that allows firearm owners to temporarily store their guns at a secure police location for up to six months.

Cincinnati police said the new program hopefully will benefit people who are in crisis or who are at risk of self harm and suicide.

Police encouraged people to also store their firearms in the department’s property room while traveling or when they have family members and children visiting.

More than 10 young children have been injured or killed in accidental shootings in the Miami Valley region in the last handful of years.

A 3-year-old boy accidentally shot himself in the leg in Riverside in January 2020. Riverside police officials said the boy apparently was playing with his father’s gun that he found in a home on Eubanks Drive.
