On April 22, Trotwood police responded to the 7500 block of Old Dayton after a man texted Montgomery Regional Dispatch that human remains were found near his driveway.
Officers arrived and found legs wrapped in a tarp, according to a police report.
A serial number from a knee replacement surgery helped investigators identify the remains as 75-year-old Edgar Keiter Sr.
Kettering and Trotwood police searched Keiter Sr.’s Croftshire Drive apartment in Kettering a few days later. Appliances and carpet were reportedly missing from the unit.
Neighbors told investigators Keiter Jr. was at the apartment the previous week and was seen driving his father’s car, according to Kettering Municipal Court records.
On May 1, investigators found the rest of Keiter Sr.’s remains during a search of a storage unit on Guenther Road in Trotwood.
The person renting the storage unit reportedly told investigators Keiter Jr. asked them to reserve it in their name.
A grand jury indicted Keiter Jr. on gross abuse of a corpse, tampering with evidence and theft charges on May 10. The investigation into Keiter Sr.’s death continued and additional evidence showed Keiter Jr. was responsible for his father’s murder, according to the Montgomery County Prosecutor’s Office.
With the additional charges approved Wednesday, Keiter Jr. is facing a total of 32 charges in connection to his father’s death and dismemberment.
He is being held at the Montgomery County Jail on a $500,000 bond.
Keiter Jr.’s son, Tygan Keiter, and his girlfriend, Amanda Reiff, were also charged in connection to the case.
Tygan Keiter pleaded guilty to two counts of tampering with evidence and one count of theft in November. His sentencing and probation report is scheduled for Feb. 25.
In December, Reiff pleaded guilty to complicity to commit tampering with evidence, complicity to commit gross abuse of a corpse, misuse of credit cards and two counts of forgery. Her sentencing is set for March 4.
