Underground fire closes multiple streets, Reibold Building in downtown Dayton

Multiple streets are closed and the Reibold Building evacuated after an underground electrical fire was reported in downtown Dayton Wednesday afternoon.

A fire was reported underground at 117 South Main Street at 12:57 p.m., according to Montgomery County Regional Dispatch.

No injuries have been reported. AES Ohio crews are on the scene and assisting firefighters.

A fire in an electrical vault under Main Street caught fire, sending smoke into the Reibold Building, said Kevin Lavoie, director of communications for Montgomery County. The Dayton Fire Department evacuated the building.

There is no estimate for when employees or the public will be able to return to the building.

Main Street is closed from Fifth to Sixth streets. The city put stop signs at the Fifth and Patterson-St.Clair intersection because the traffic lights were out, possibly related to the fire or electrical issue.
