Ridership has jumped significantly this year with Warren County’s new transit provider, according to officials.

The number of passengers since January for Valley Transport has increased between 32% and 70% per month, said Anirudh Mohan, its chief financial officer.

Mohan cited the company’s technology and efficiency as reasons for the rise in ridership, which in 2023 averaged about 3,300 passengers a month under Universal Transportation System, county records show.

UTS contracted for the service since 2011, said Susanne Mason, county grants administration director.

Service is available Monday-Friday 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Regular one-way fares are $3, but that price drops to $1.50 for children 12 and under, the elderly and the disabled, according to the county.

Tickets available online or exact change can be given at time of pickup, officials said.

The majority of the “the passengers are either elderly or disabled, and without the transit service, they would be stuck going nowhere,” Mason said.

“And this is for many of them, the only affordable transportation service they have,” she added. “While transit doesn’t tackle every transportation issue, it’s very valuable to a lot of residents.”

Fares, which are set by the county commission, are comparable to other counties, Mason said. The last rate hike in Warren County was about 10 years ago, she added.
