A 33-year-old man was found guilty to shooting and killing another man in May 2022 outside a bar in Xenia.

Brad Alan Stewart of Xenia was convicted Friday by a Greene County Common Pleas Court jury of aggravated murder, aggravated robbery, felonious assault, tampering with evidence and failure to comply with the signal of a police officer following a five-day trial.

Emergency crews were called at 1:35 a.m. May 25, 2022, to the Roundtable Bar at 306 Home Ave. in Xenia, where they found an unconscious man with a gunshot wound. The victim, later identified as 30-year-old Jacob S. Scoby of Xenia, was taken to Kettering Health Greene Memorial Hospital, where he died.

“While Stewart appeared friendly and engaged with Scoby inside the bar, Stewart privately told a witness that he wanted to harm Scoby,” according to a statement from Greene County Prosecutor David Hayes. “A short time later, as Stewart and Scoby were standing outside the front door of the bar, Stewart attacked Scoby from behind with the firearm. A struggle ensued, and a witness testified that Stewart attempted to shoot Scoby with the firearm but failed, as it was loaded, but there was no round in the firearm chamber. As Scoby retreated, Stewart loaded a round into the firearm chamber and shot Scoby in the face.”

After the shooting, Stewart took another person’s truck by force and fled. He changed vehicles and hid the gun.

A multi-agency manhunt was launched, and Stewart was spotted around 10:40 a.m. in the area of Clifton Road by the Greene County Sheriff’s Office. However, Stewart fled a traffic stop, prompting a pursuit that ended about five minutes later when he stopped in the 2500 block of Wilberforce-Clifton Road and surrendered.

“Nothing can bring Jacob Scoby back to his loved ones, but they now know that this terrible crime will not go unpunished,” Hayes said.

A sentencing date has not yet been set by the court.
