Santana, who was born and grew up in Yellow Springs, came from a musical family. Her mother and grandmother were both classical musicians.
Santana learned drums at an early age and has been creating music with a variety of artists since the 1980s.

She was a long-time drummer in Lenny Kravitz’s band. Some of the artists she has worked with include Joss Stone, Joe Henderson, Pharoah Sanders, Sonny Simmons, Ron Carter, Sam Rivers, Cassandra Wilson, Angela Bofill, Buckethead, Bill Laswell.
In recent years she has toured with her husband, legendary guitarist Carlos Santana.
