ALDI to reopen Kettering store Thursday

Two-month rebuild part of a wave of Dayton region’s grocery-store renovations

The ALDI store at 1940 E. Dorothy Lane in Kettering is poised to reopen Thursday, Sept. 3, after a two-month makeover — the most recent renovation project as grocers compete in the heated Dayton-area market.

Dan Gavin, division vice president for ALDI, said workers significantly reworked store’s interior, upgrading all of its refrigeration systems, enlarging the existing store’s sales floor and adding a fifth aisle to the four-aisle, 10,000-square-foot store. The increased retail space will allow ALDI to add a wider range of healthier options such as organic produce, USDA Choice-grade beef, a recently introduced gluten-free product line and other offerings, ALDI officials said.

A similar renovation was completed earlier this month at the ALDI store at 6300 Brandt Pike in Huber Heights.

A ribbon-cutting is scheduled for 9 a.m. Thursday at the Kettering store, which had shut down July 3 for the renovations. The first 100 shoppers to enter the store following the ribbon-cutting will receive a “golden ticket” containing gift certificates of varying amounts. Customers can also enter an on-site sweepstakes for a chance to win a year’s supply of ALDI produce. Several product-sampling stations also will be available.

ALDI has opened new grocery stores in Bellefontaine and Hamilton within the last two years. Its remodel of the Huber Heights store comes as several large retailers, such as Walmart and Target, have added grocery items to their stores.

Several grocers — including Kroger, Meijer, Dorothy Lane Market, and Trader Joe’s — have launched or completed extensive renovation projects at existing Dayton-area stores, which now face competition from new entrants to the market, including Whole Foods Market in Washington Twp. and two Fresh Thyme Farmer’s Market stores in Sugarcreek Twp. and Beavercreek.
