12 amazing people who came to Dayton to celebrate aviation hall of famers

The Aviation Hall of Fame ceremony has brought luminaries from the aviation world and beyond to Dayton each year since 1962, even some that one might not expect at a celebration of flight enthusiasts.

With the announcement Thursday that the ceremony will be moved to Fort Worth in 2017, we look back at some of the most interesting characters who have showed up in the region to attend recent ceremonies.

2001

Neil Armstrong

Neil Armstrong, the first man to walk on the moon, attends the National Aviation Hall of Fame 2003 Pioneers of Flight Homecoming gala Saturday at the Dayton Convention Center.

Known to many as the first man to set foot on the moon, Armstrong was inducted into the National Aviation Hall of Fame in 1979.

Gen. Chuck Yeager

Yeager was the first person to surpass the speed of sound in a test flight in 1947. He was inducted into the National Aviation Hall of Fame in 1973.

John Glenn

Glenn, who died on Dec. 8, was the first American to orbit the Earth in 1962. Glenn was enshrined into the National Aviation Hall of Fame in 1976

2003

Scott Crossfield

7-18-03  --  National Aviation Hall of Fame enshrinee Scott Crossfield shared a laugh with National Association of State Aviation Officials president Henry Ogrodzinski at the NAHF President's Reception and Dinner on Friday night.

Crossfield was the first person to exceed Mach 2, in 1953, and to surpass Mach 3, in 1960, and survive. He was inducted into the National Aviation Hall of Fame in 1983.

2006

Bob Hoover

Hoover, who died Oct. 25, was a world-renowned acrobatic pilot who also served as a fighter pilot during World War II. Hoover was inducted into the National Hall of Fame in 1988.

2007

Sally Ride

Sally Ride, the first American woman in space, is presented a medal symbolizing her induction into the National Aviation Hall of Fame by friend and former astronaut Robert Crippen on Saturday.  Ride was one of five aviators honored at the event.  Staff photo by Dave Munch

Ride became the first woman in space in June 1983 abroad STS-7 Challenger. She was inducted into the National Aviation Hall of Fame in 2007.

2008

Sean D. Tucker

Tucker is a world-renowned air show performer and opened the Sean D. Tucker School of Aerobatic Flight. The flight school is a world premier precision flight training school focused on safety. Tucker was inducted into the National Aviation Hall of Fame in 2008.

2009

Eileen Collins

The event was held for aviation figures who are to be enshrined in the organization's hall of fame. The party was held in the Crowne Plaza Hotel, in downtown Dayton. Collins commanded STS 114, a space shuttle mission.

Collins became an astronaut in 1991. In 1999, she was the first woman to command a space shuttle flight. She was inducted into the National Aviation Hall of Fame in 2009.

Arnold Palmer

Palmer, who died Sept. 25, 2016, was an avid pilot and advocate for aviation by flying to tournaments worldwide.

Buzz Aldrin

Aldrin was the second man to set foot on the moon in 1969 and was inducted into the National Aviation Hall of Fame in 2000.

2015

James A. Lovell

Lovell was the commander of the Apollo 13 mission. The mission was going to perform the third moon landing, but due to mechanical problems the mission was aborted. Lovell was inducted into the National Aviation Hall of Fame in 1998.
