Saturday’s Fairmont vs. Wayne sectional final boys basketball game has been postponed until Monday after a current Fairmont student-athlete attempted suicide early Saturday.

As news of the incident spread, Fairmont students and the school spirit Twitter account announced plans for supporters to wear yellow to Saturday night’s game in honor of suicide awareness. The student was not on Fairmont’s current basketball team, but had played in earlier years.

But just after 4 p.m., the Southwest District Athletic Board announced that the game would be rescheduled for Monday “due to unfortunate circumstances.” The game will be played at 7 p.m. Monday at Centerville High School.

“The student was part of our Firebird family, and this directly impacts not just our school but our entire community,” Fairmont Principal Tyler Alexander said. “We felt that it was in best interests to postpone the game. We worked directly with the Southwest District, and they were gracious enough to postpone the game. We appreciate that from them, and we appreciate Wayne’s understanding through this difficult time.”

Alexander announced Sunday that Fairmont High School will be open beginning at 2 pm Sunday "for anyone who needs support through this difficult time. Enter through door #1. Counselors, principals, and other adults will be available."

“There’s no right way to handle this," he said. "You have to react based on what you feel is best for the students, the staff and the school."

Fairmont’s girls team played their district final game as scheduled early Saturday afternoon, falling to state-ranked Mount Notre Dame.

The winner of the Fairmont-Wayne boys game will play Lakota East in a district final game, Saturday, March 9 at UD Arena.

People in need can call a suicide hotline number at the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 800-273-TALK (800-273-8255) to reach a trained counselor.
