Beavercreek elementary schools to get more secure entrances

Beavercreek’s school board approved $1.5 million to renovate Main and Parkwood elementary schools on Tuesday evening. The move, officials said, will increase security by enhancing the schools’ entrances.

“These are the last two schools in the district to be renovated to include secure vestibules,” Superintendent Bill McGlothlin said.

Both schools have entrances that require parents and visitors to walk through the school before reaching the school office. The renovations will send visitors directly to the offices where they will check in before entering student areas.

Additionally, Main Elementary will get new boilers under the contracts. McGlothlin said the old boilers used to heat the school will be replaced with more energy efficient models.

“The lowest and most responsible bids came in $207,000 under the estimates,” he said.

District architects suggested that if the bids were below estimates, the board should consider using part of that money to replace water pipes at Main.

The board unanimously approved the contracts and the water pipe option.

Bilbrey Construction of Dayton won the contract for the two vestibules, bidding just over $1.1 million for the project. C.G. Egli of Dayton had a low bid of $339,000 for boiler replacement and $23,000 for the pipe replacement. Construction will start at the signing of the contracts. A construction schedule has not yet been negotiated.
