An eight-year-old Middletown boy is being called a hero after his quick actions saved him and his sister during a carjacking.

The Kid’s Wish Network awarded Chance Blue as Hero of the Month Sunday morning at a ceremony.

In April, Chance was in a car with his sister Skylar in front of Atrium Medical Center’s emergency room entrance waiting for his great grandmother to come back from helping their aunt to the hospital when a stranger jumped in the car and started to drive away.

Skylar tried to flee from the car when the stranger grabbed her hoodie, preventing her from doing so. Chance then freed his sister from the man’s grasp and flung himself and his sister out of the car to safety.

Chance received the Heart of a Hero award at Berachan Church where they make it a habit to honor first responders.

“A boy becomes a man when he does the heroic and Chance has really stepped out to remind us all what a first responder is to do and that’s to run into or do whatever they can to rescue the person in need,” said Lead Pastor Lamar Ferrell. “It’s truly remarkable to see that he had wits about him to just say ok, I’ve got to remove myself and at the same time my sister in a moving car from the situation that could’ve been dreadful.”

During the ceremony, Chance was honored and given a special Hero of the Month recognition certificate, a HERO shirt, a special teddy bear named HUG-O and a $300 Walmart gift card.

Chance said he wants to be a firefighter when he grows up for one reason.

“Saving people.”
