Communities have stepped up so much to care for their neighbors after 15 tornadoes tore through the Miami Valley in the Memorial Day outbreak, that many organizations are asking people to hold off on donations, especially water, at least for a few weeks.

"We are proud to live in such a community that cares," said Lora Davenport, Dayton Food Bank spokeswoman.

The Dayton Food Bank has received a million-and-a-half bottles of water and an estimated 500,000 pounds of food.

“We have more than enough water to make sure that everybody who is struggling with water still has some made available to them,” Davenport said.

Harrison Twp. leaders also told News Center 7's Sean Cudahy they do not need more water, but they continue to need non-perishable food, laundry detergent, paper products and cleaning supplies.

The Food Bank’s need for food and hygiene products is expected to return in a few weeks.

“We’ll be able to use them as we continue this work,” said Davenport.
