Broadcaster, former Mets pitcher Ron Darling announces he has thyroid cancer

In a tweet, Darling, 58, wrote that the disease is treatable.

"After the removal of the mass on my chest along with further tests, I have been diagnosed with thyroid cancer," Darling tweeted. "My doctors have said they are optimistic that the cancer is treatable and that I would be back on air talking baseball in the next month or so."

Darling also took to social media April 14, tweeting he was undergoing surgery after doctors discovered "a large mass" on his chest.

Darling took a leave of absence from his broadcasting jobs at WPIX and SportsNet New York after he made his April announcement, WPIX reported. Darling also does color commentary for TBS' national baseball coverage and is an offseason studio analyst for MLB Network, appearing on "MLB Tonight" and "Hot Stove."

Darling pitched 13 seasons in the majors, compiling a 136-116 regular-season record. The Honolulu native spent nine seasons with the Mets, going 99-70 with a 3.50 ERA.
