Scottie Middleton, 40, of South Carolina, was able to escape through the passenger side of the truck. However, Myran Farrar, 60, of Raleigh, was trapped in the sleeping area of the truck, WRAL reported.
Jared Giles told the television station he was pumping gas when the fire started, and that flames were shooting 5 feet into the air. Lee Williams, a maintenance employee at the truck stop, said he saw smoke coming from the truck.
The two men grabbed fire extinguishers and were able to douse the flames and pull Farrar out of the truck, WRAL reported.
Middleton and Farrar were taken to an area hospital, the television station reported. Farrar was later airlifted to the N.C. Jaycee Burn Center in Chapel Hill, according to the Hartnett County Sheriff’s Office. Their condition is unknown.
Williams deflected praise after his efforts.
"I'm no hero," Williams told WRAL. "I'm grateful to be able to help somebody."
