Woodland Cemetery and members of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War will place Memorial Day wreaths at the cemetery's Civil War monument to honor those who sacrificed themselves for the country. The Sherman Camp Color Guard will present the National Colors using a 36-star U.S. flag which would be appropriate for the 19th century, according to a media release.
Attendees of the ceremony are invited to lay flower petals upon graves of veterans buried in the Civil War Section to honor the dead.
The Civil War took place between 1861 and 1865. Memorial Day was then created in 1866 as a nation-wide day to honor the nation's war dead with the support of the Grand Army of the Republic, the largest civil war veterans' organization.
