Company admits mistake in fatal bridge collapse

The Kokosing Construction Company, the company involved with the Hopple Street bridge collapse, announced today an engineering mistake on their part may have been a contributing factor in the Jan. 19 incident.

The bridge collapse on Interstate 75 killed Kokosing foreman Brandon Carl and led to an extended closure of the highway.

Brian Burgett, chief executive officer at Kokosing Construction, released a statement today saying preliminary findings indicate “Kokosing Construction” made an engineering mistake.”

” I have personally reached out to Brandon’s fiancé, Kendra, to share this information. I am very sorry, and all of us are deeply troubled by these findings,” Burgett’s statement reads.

Kokosing is assisting the ongoing investigation by the state, according to the statement.

To help prevent future collapses, Kokosing has hired an outside firm, Jamssen & Spaans, to prepare designs. Those plans will then be reviewed by the company’s engineering team before going forward with a demolition project, according to the statement.
